Moving to a new area is both challenging and rewarding. It takes some time to get to know the local region and where to access local resources and amenities.

The Comox Valley is very picturesque so even if you don’t find what you’re looking for right away, you’ll enjoy the exploration.

The Land of Plenty!

Named by the Komoks First Nations people who originally inhabited the area, the name Kw’umuxws means ‘plentiful, rich, wealthy’ and was later anglicized to Comox. The local military base at 19 Wing Comox is the only base on the West Coast is an integral part of Search and Rescue efforts.

The Comox Valley

The Comox Valley has three main urban centres which include the City of Courtenay, the Town of Comox, and the Village of Cumberland. The outlying areas are part of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD), which is divided into 3 electoral districts A, B, and C. These governing municipalities are known collectively as the Comox Valley, however each is separate in terms of its annual budget, bylaws and municipal services. If you plan to operate a business, you will need to obtain your business license from the city or town you live in. While the CVRD doesn’t require a business license, home-based businesses are subject to a one-time review to ensure that your business activities and parking requirements are within the zoning bylaws.

Accessibility

The Comox Valley is very accessible by air through Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) for flights through WestJet, Air Canada and Pacific Coastal Airlines. Harbour Air also provides float plane service to Vancouver from the Comox Marina. By car, Vancouver Island is serviced by BC Ferries, with two terminals in Nanaimo (Departure Bay or Duke Point), one in Victoria at Swartz Bay as well as to and from the Sunshine Coast via the Powell River terminal.

Education

Local schools in the Comox Valley are funded and overseen by the Comox Valley School District 71. You’ll find a list of public schools and catchment areas here. A Google search will also introduce you to independent and private schools in the area.

For post secondary options, the Comox Valley is home to North Island College, Excel Career College, and Discovery Community College.
